What to expect from this 5 day Tanzania Chimpanzee Experience

A safari in the far west of Tanzania, on Lake Tanganyika offers one of the continent’s true wilderness experiences. With very few visitors the Mahale Mountains National Park is a great place to get away from it all – but it is also home to the best chimpanzee viewing on the continent. Lush forest-decked mountains look out over the spectacular Lake Tanganyika, the world’s second deepest lake.

Days 1 – 4: Mahale Mountains National Park

An early flight departs Arusha for the far western region of Tanzania and Mahale Mountains National Park on the shores of the spectacular Lake Tanganyika. Viewing the vast interior of Tanzania from the air is the ideal way to appreciate the country. The flight will take in the whole morning and you will arrive at an airstrip near the lake shore from where it is a 90 minute dhow to reach the lodge.

Greystoke Mahale is situated on a secluded beach and the accommodation is set in the treeline of the forest, bringing visions of paradise to mind. The afternoon activity will revolve around an activity on the lake in the form of fishing, kayaking or just enjoying the surrounds. A walk in the forest may also be on offer.

Greystoke Mahale accommodation is made up of wooden bandas, only six in all, with views of the beach and the distant shores of the lake. The open-fronted interiors of the bandas are from seasoned dhow timber and each has a dressing room and an upstairs chill deck. Bathrooms adjoin and are accessible via a short boardwalk with flush toilets and showers

Mahale National Park is home to around 1,000 chimpanzees, some of which have been habituated to humans, allowing for incredible viewing from relatively close quarters. The forest is also home to a range of species such as other primates, bushbuck, bushpig and a diversity of birds and butterflies.
